Every year, graphic design has different trends. 2023 has been no different. So far, with 2023 coming to an end, we have seen graphic designers start to pull away from minimalist design and use monochrome colors to help create bold and diverse design styles. Graphic design trends are super important to recognize and sometimes even follow because they can help you create projects that can communicate and help you connect to the audience you are trying to reach in a timely fashion. Let’s go over some trends we have seen so far in 2023 that will also be seen more and more in 2024.
Maximalism
With minimalism ruling the design world for years, it was a bit shocking to see the tide shift in the direction of maximalism being used more. This trend seems to be being used more as an escape from uninspiring routines and any restrictions. We are starting to see bold, explosive typography, some nice radical color combinations, and a bit of an overwhelming visual element. Although I think that maximalism can be overwhelming at first, it can turn out to be very striking and almost unforgettable. Give it a try and mess with it a bit to see what it’s about. It may take a bit to get used to, but I can promise you that you will find something you like after a bit, and maybe it will fit you and your business.
Fonts
By now, we all know that the best font to go for when it comes to your business is to use something that is simple and easy to read and understand. That has changed this year. Some fonts are starting to transcend language barriers and focus more on visual communication. Businesses are starting to move away from mundane sans-serif fonts, and instead, fonts that have interesting shapes and colors are going to be moving forward. We are starting to see serif fonts and display fonts be used more and start to experiment with how far being legible can be pushed while still trying to maintain clarity. It is important to note that you should and need to be cautious with this, as sacrificing legibility for a new design can end up backfiring and hurting your business.
Doodles
It seems that handmade illustrations and doodles were a prime trend in graphic design in 2023. If you are a business owner who is looking to stray away from AI designs, this trend is perfect for you. It is all about reconnecting with people who like art and handmade stuff. A great way to connect with new customers can be through quirky patterns and quirky illustrations on your products.
Gothic
With the hit show Wednesday taking over the world this year, the goth craze has been taking center stage on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Goth and grunge design is an opposing force to what is known as the bubbly, colorful, and cuteness era we are seeing in the design world. When it comes to what we mean with the word gothic, we don’t always mean dark colors. Sometimes it can mean ripped textures or just tons of dark crimson and sapphire. Experiment with this a bit, as it can make designs and logos look really unique and interesting.
Well, those are just some of the popular trends that we have seen in 2023 so far. I am excited to see what other graphic design trends arise as the year comes to an end, and I'm excited to see what kind of trends come out next year in 2024. Let us know what you think of these trends, and maybe show us a trend you are trying to start!
